JANUARY 10TH AT THE PLEASANTON HILTON --
THANK YOU TO OUR 58 GUESTS AND TO CHAPTER VICE PRESIDENT KELLY
IDIART FOR A RELEVANT AND THOUGHT-PROVOKING PRESENTATION.

Presented by Tanya Komas, Ph.D., CIM Director and Program
Coordinator
Our ACI Student Night event this year moves to Chico on Thursday,
February 9. We would normally host our February event on the 14th
- but that's Valentine's Day. Not good to ignore!
We'll focus on the Concrete Industry Management (CIM)
program, a four-year Bachelor of Science degree at CSU, Chico, now
in its sixth successful year, with remarkable industry support of
nearly $2 million through regional and national patrons since the
program's inception.
The evening will begin with a quick update on the overall CIM
program at Chico then move to a presentation of the CIM
Preservation Field School at Alcatraz Island.
The
Field School is an ongoing project in partnership with the
National Park Service (NPS) for 10 weeks from June through August,
under the guidance of Tanya Komas and Jason Hagin, architect for
the NPS. 2012 Marks the third year for the Alcatraz project.
What construction elements of the prison and associated buildings
show various forms of deterioration? What caused the
deterioration? What effective and innovative preservation
techniques are now being used? How can new patches be “aged” to
match weathered concrete?
Finished stair repair with
approximately half of the concrete replaced. Decorative concrete
methods were craftily employed so that new is indistinguishable
from old.

Students participating in the Preservation Field School will help
present an update on what they are learning from Alcatraz.
AND - The CIM staff will provide an afternoon tour of the CIM
facilities at Chico. Please your interest when you make
reservations.

CIM Program Founding Patrons,
Supporters, National Park Service Staff, CIM Staff and Students
gather at an Alcatraz preservation site called the "Puppy Stairs."
See you February 9 in Chico for great food, networking and an
interesting program!

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE 2014 SPRING
ACI
CONVENTION IN RENO
Prior to our May 10
SNCA/ACI dinner in Reno, members of the ACI Chapter Board and SNCA Board
and staff had lunch and a productive work session with a
presentation from Robyn Nichols of the Reno-Sparks Convention
and Visitors Authority and Charmaine LaMay, who provided a walking
tour of the Grand Sierra Resort that she represents to
convention clients such as ACI International.
The GSR will be the host venue the 2014 Spring
ACI Convention, and as we are the Host Chapter for the
event, our Convention Committee will be populated by California
and Nevada volunteers.
If you would like to get involved in
the Convention Committee -- and there is something for everyone to do
-- please contact 2010-2011 Chapter President Tarek Khan who
is Co-Chair of the Chapter Convention Committe at
tarek.khan@basf.com.
